President Pasquerella took charge of Mount Holyoke in July 2010, but it is the road that brought her there that should truly inspire all of us. Her parents, who divorced when she was 11, were high-school dropouts. As a teen, Ms. Pasquerella moved to South Hadley - where Mount Holyoke students are part of the scenery - because her mother got a job working in a light switch factory. President Pasquerella would go on to earn a doctorate in Philosophy from Brown University, and from there she has gone on to become a celebrated scholar, teacher, and academic leader whose training as an ethicist has helped her ranscend traditional boundaries of the academy and engage with communities locally and around the globe.

Our Honored Speaker Georgette Devine poses here with Prospective Rotarian Rodney Furr as he attends his first Rotary Club Meeting
December 6 - Georgette Devine – a true American patriot (and always a Marine!).
Ms. Devine, of Conway, served our country in the United States Marine Corps from 1944 to 1946 as an aircraft mechanic. When she enlisted, she had no mechanical background; her family didn't even own a car! But it was 1944, our country was at war, and Ms. Devine, 21, wanted to sign up. Why? "Out of boredom," she says with a laugh, "but with a little bit of patriotism thrown in." On the week of Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, please join us in saluting this very special Marine with a great story to tell. And wait 'til you see the photo of her sitting in the cockpit of a fighter plane… Norman Rockwell should've put her on the cover of the Saturday Evening Post!

November 29 - Elizabeth E. Barker, director and chief curator of the Mead Art Museum at Amherst College.

Dr. Barker will talk about the Mead's history, activities, art collections and involvement in the cultural life of the Pioneer Valley.
Before coming to Amherst, Dr. Barker directed the Picker Art Gallery at Colgate University. She has also served as associate curator of
drawings and prints at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Dr. Barker is a fellow in the department of prints and drawings at the British Museum
and she has been a guest curator at the Yale Center for British Art. She has published on topics from Italian Renaissance drawings to modern
American prints and is an expert on British and American 18th and 19th century painting.
Barker holds a B.A. in the history of art from Yale University and a Ph.D. in art history from New York University's Institute of Fine Arts.
November 22 - Yale Professor emeritus Michael D. Coe addressed our club about his archaeological work on British forts in the hill towns of western Mass.
Professor Coe is one of the leading archaeologists in the country, if not the world - Check out his wikipedia link HERE
While his prominence derives from his work in the field of Mayan archaeology, he's lived in Heath for many years - so western Mass. has been fortunate enough to benefit from his attentions (hence the topic of his presentation).
He also happens to be a really great and down-to-earth guy who has a knack for explaining things in plain English so that everyone can enjoy his fascinating field of endeavor! So, in addition to being a real honor for the club to have him, it should also be a lot of fun for everyone.
